1. Please introduce yourself. Sure. My name is John Walker, I’m a chairman of Macquarie Group of Companies in Korea, and I’m also the vice chairman of Macquarie Capital Business in Asia. But we are worldwide specialist areas like infrastructures, natural resources, and energy. We’ve got around 13,500 people across our global businesses. So although we were originally started in Australia, we’re now very much a global financial institution with the majority of our revenues actually coming from outside Australia. And naturally our business here in Korea, which is primarily based in Seoul, is a very very important part of our global and Asian footprint. 2. What was the biggest advantage of doing business in Seoul? I think there was a few things. One is that Seoul is very clearly ‘the major city’ in Korea. So one of the great advantages was its population, its proximity to other countries, in the region, because we were also we were very interested in company in countries such as Japan, China, etc. Again, this point is about being able to hire very well-educated people, very important to us. And the other big factor was the level of willingness of other financial institutions and companies in Seoul to partner with a foreign company that brought some unique financial technology. And, of course, the other key factor for us was the quality of communication technology. So at that time, some 17 years ago, other countries in the world were not so advanced in the areas like Internet. Korea was far and far and ahead above those other countries. The other thing that really as I reflect on, it was very important to us, was the accessibility of regulators and government officials. So it was not difficult for us to have a dialogue with government or regulators when we were not sure about what the law provided for and what it did not provided for. So these ingredients of transparency, accessibility, willing partners, and all of the things that are proper major city brings were extremely important to us as defining characteristics of Seoul. One of the bits of advice we give to other financial institutions that are looking to come to Seoul. Think about the idea of entering into partnerships with one of the very good quality local domestic institutions. Natural Sound Russia and South Korea have overcome a legacy of Cold War bitterness, signing a package of agreements to strengthen bilateral trade and investment ties. The agreement underlines Seoul's desire to tap a potentially large new market and Moscow's interest in attracting South Korean capital to revive its ailing economy. Russian Prime Minister Chernomyrdin, met Thursday with President Kim Young-sam for talks concentrating on trade and the economy. A longtime ally of communist North Korea, Russia has rapidly improved relations with the North's arch enemy, pro-Western South Korea, since the former Soviet Union established diplomatic relations with Seoul in 1990. Chernomyrdin held a separate meeting with his South Korean opposite Lee Hong-koo and the two prime ministers signed an agreement to strengthen trade and investment ties. South Korea hopes to tap the potential Russian market, and Moscow wants South Korean investment to help revive its sputtering economy. The agreement calls on the two sides to strengthen cooperation for a number of big projects now under way, including gas exploitation in Irkutsk near the Russia-Mongolia border and construction of a gas pipeline to South Korea. Chernomyrdin appealed for more vigorous South Korean investment, saying the two countries have the potential to prosper together economically. South Korea also plans to build a trade centre complex in Moscow and an industrial complex in the Russian Far Eastern port of Nahodka to house light-industry enterprises in the resource-rich region. Chernomyrdin, who arrived Wednesday for a three-day meeting, said Moscow will soon give formal approval to a South Korean plan to export 10-thousand to 15-thousand taxis to Moscow. He also proposed that South Korea renovate more than 70 factories Russia built in North Korea in the 1960s and 1970s. Chernomyrdin said most of those factories are idle because of North Korea's lack of fuel and parts. The two sides also agreed to open negotiations on how Russia will repay 400 (m) million (US) dollars owed to Seoul in loans. The money should have been repaid by last year. In a complex loan repayment deal, Russia is providing raw materials and high-tech military goods to pay another 457 (m) million dollars which was due two years ago. The now-defunct Soviet Union had been a main supporter and arms provider for North Korea, a longtime enemy of Seoul. In 2009, the Seoul office market was one of the best performing in Asia Pacific, with minimal falls in rental, only moderate increase in vacancy and record-high levels of investment sales activity. In 2010, the market will face considerable challenges as a result of large supply additions. In this video, Jones Lang LaSalle considers the opportunities that market conditions will provide for tenants, landlords and new investors. http://www.joneslanglasallekorea.co.kr

1. When did first come to Korea? I came to Korea to live only five months ago, but I’ve been coming here for three years. Also, I’ve been following Korean music for many, many years. I like Miss A and Big Bang in particular. 2. That’s very cool. What was the initial impression when you first visited here? From outside before you come here, it feels like a very tough country to get to know because it’s not like Hong Kong or Singapore. But when you come here, it’s a very welcoming city, extremely different from what I expected. People are very warm and welcoming, and the culture is quite dynamic. I think it’s underestimated how wonderful it is. But when you come here, you can really feel it straight away. 3. I think you have some cultural difference that demands your adjustment. Do you have any situation, or episode, that stays in your mind? Korea is my 13th country that I’ve lived in, and each country has its own cultural dynamics. One thing that really resonates with Korea is that I go running a lot particularly in Namsan Park, and I find that if I smile when I run, everyone smiles back. But if I don’t smile, then people don’t smile back as well. I find that it’s important culturally here. Thus, if you’re a foreigner, it’s important to engage. Then people will engage back. Also, the food is wonderful and the people are very proud of their country as well. 4. As you said, there are huge number of places to see, eat, and enjoy in Seoul. So, do you have any particular favorite place? So much choice and I haven’t begun in only five months to really discover everything. But I’ve been everywhere, from the south the river in Gangnam area, to Itaewon, to this area near the palace, it’s beautiful. One thing that I love doing is walking and jogging, and so I can see the city is very easy to get around. You can go by taxi, metro, or walk, or bicycle as well. So, there’s a lot of choices. In an effort to attract more foreign investment.... South Korea′s trade ministry has announced new deregulation plans to help attract 20-billion dollars in foreign direct investment this year. Equipping the nation′s free economic zones to turn them into a hub for foreign investment... Seoul will help companies hire more foreign professionals... by raising the quota to 30 percent of total employees from 20. Those working in the medical R&D sector will also be allowed to stay up to 5-years instead of the current 3-years. The government will also set up logistics and business infrastructure to attract investors from China and Middle East. Foreign direct investment in Korea is on the rise... logging 10-billion dollars in mid-July.
